Grammatico Sicilian Pastry
Hi, it’s Erminia again,
I told you about Erice last week (read the article here).
I wanted to dedicate a special gastronomic space to Grammatico pastry shop because I think it is a perfect place not to be missed if you are in Erice.
Who is Maria Grammatico?
A woman shaped by the experiences of war, hunger and poverty. She was born in 1940 in a Trapani that did not allow any luxuries.
Orphaned of her father at the age of 11, she was sent to the San Carlo Convent, where she remained for 15 years. Intense years of hard work, Maria tells us; the convent bakery represented a real salvation for her.
Once she had left the convent, she decided to open a small shop in which to revive all the knowledge she had acquired through her apprenticeship, starting with ‘just three kilos of almonds’.
There, in that small workshop, with the help of her brothers and her mother, Mrs Maria Grammatico experimented, invented and created new sweets and, over time, her name and her small workshop gradually became associated with the pastry tradition of Erice.
Grammatico Today
This is a charming pastry shop in the heart of Erice, not far from the main square, perfectly set in the traditional medieval environment of Erice.
It has its own inner courtyard where during the summer season you can have a coffee while enjoying almond pastries al fresco.
It is also fantastic in winter, a warm and reserved environment, taste a nice warm Genoese freshly baked and a cup of chocolate, a paradise of taste.
